A: Here's a good place to start: Q: What do the shapes mean? A: The angular parallelograms are used for the subject of the fugue (and, in some cases, fragments of the subject). The subject contains the 'BACH' (B-flat, A, C, B-natural) motif, which is highlighted in the subject; this highlighting is also used when that motif is used elsewhere. When the motif appears untransposed (so that the notes are BACH), it is outlined in white.
