It is brown above, mottled with black, buff, and white. Its tail is pale brown, and its underparts are plain white. The cryptic coloration of the plumage enables it to blend with the bark of the tree trunk. A characteristic feature is the long, stiff tail that provides support as it creeps along tree trunks. It has a long, sharp decurved bill to forage. Males and females are alike, and juveniles have a duller, less contrasted appearance. About twelve subspecies of Eurasian treecreeper have been identified, but this becomes confusing due to their very similar appearances, overlapping ranges, and tendency to interbreed (Manthey et al., 2010).
