The Great Lakes region shares a common religious tradition that originated in the pre-colonial period. In this area, cults based on the institution of spirit possession reached a defined structure with the emergence of kingdoms and centralized societies, around the fifteenth century. At that moment, practices devoted to the spirits of deceased heroes and chiefs became central in political and social life. With the arrival of Arabs merchants and European travelers and missionaries, in the second half of the eighteenth century, the religious landscape changed dramatically. The introduction of the “religions of the book” produced a crisis both in political and cultural life, that ended in harsh and blooded conflicts. In Uganda after Independence, Christian churches of different denominations controlled the political arena.
