Smyrtonos (Bulgaria) Cast Into Outer Darkness 2024 EP

The second EP, following a prolific period of releases since its inception two years ago. “Cast Into Outer Darkness“ sees Todorac delving once again into a more primitive and raw concept compared to the band's debut album. The shift is immediately evident in the heavier and more prominent percussive presence that drives the tracks, probably blaming the snares for that. While the debut album flirted with black‘n roll elements, this EP goes slightly back to the roots, embracing a nasty and atavistic black metal style. The drums are thunderous, laying a foundation of d-beat patterns that underpin the chaotic guitar work. The background synths, though sparse, add a layer of eerie atmosphere especially in more languid sections , creating a sense of unease and otherworldliness. This record solidifies Todorac‘s place in the lo-fi black metal scene, while demonstrating a maturation of the project’s sound, embracing a midway between the raw and primitive and a more versatile and dynamic approach.
