SURYANAR KOVIL - The Lord Surya's Temple (The Planet Sun) Suryanar Kovil is located at the distance of 18 kilometres from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is one of the few historic temples dedicated to Sun god. This Temple was built by Kulothunga Chola during 11th century A.D. And this is one of the nine Navagraha sthalas. The presiding deity is Suriyanar (The Sun) With his consorts Ushadevi and Pratyusha Devi. This is the only temple in Tamil Nadu which has shrines for all the planetary deities. There are separate shrines for all the other eight planetary deities. All the shrines are arranged facing towards Suryanar. People visit this temple on Sundays and do rituals by offering flowers and cloths to reduce the malefic effect from the planet Sun when the planet is in unfavourable position in their horoscope. Lighting a set of lamps is also commonly followed in the temple. It is very effective to chant Lord Surya's Gayatri Mantra for 9 Times on Sundays to reduce the malefic effects of Planet Sun. “Om Bhaskaraya Vidhmahe Diva karaya Dheemahe Thanno Surya Prachodayath“ Gayatri Mantra of Sun or Lord Surya Version 2 “Om Aswadwajaya Vidhmahe Pasa Hasthaya Dheemahe Thanno Surya Prachodayath“ Desert City by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license () Source: Artist:
