He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1888, winning the coveted Gold Medal and the devoted support of Tchaikovsky. After brief spells playing in orchestras in Paris, Cologne and New York, he returned to Russia. During 1893–1901 he taught at the Moscow Conservatory.
