News of these events were brought to Buenos Aires by British ships arriving on 18 May, resulting in the establishment on 25 May 1808 of the Primera Junta and effective self-determination. This May Revolution began the War of Argentine Independence that culminated in the Congress of Tucumán and a formal declaration of independence on 9 July, 1816. Con agradecimiento a INDEPENDENCE Independence gave peace To this land where I was born Argentines remember That date of freedom. One 25th* put light and love Into those souls who dreamed, Impatient hearts beat Full of enthusiasm and passion. Home of the brave, noble country Of the blue and white flag Homeland of angels and emotions That from that day I love more. In your independence were forged The loftiest ideals In this earth so divine I am happy being Argentine My country is the best. *25 May 1810 English translation by Paul Bottomer © “Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use“ for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
