Shiva was married to Sati. Sati was the daughter of Daksha, the son of Brahma. Daksha was organizing a huge fire ceremony where he invited all the gods excluding Shiva and Sati. Sati went to Shiva and informed him of the grand ceremony her father was organizing. Not withstanding the prevention of Shiva, she went to the ceremony. After she arrived at the ceremony Daksha started speaking offensively about Shiva. Sati became very upset on hearing the insult of her husband and the fact that none of the Gods present at the ceremony was defending him. As a result of which she jumped into the fire. On hearing this Shiva became very angry. He opened the locks of his hair and gave birth to two demons. They went inside and killed everybody. After cutting off the head of Daksha Shiva hung upon the body of Sati on his shoulder and started wandering like a crazy person all around the world. On seeing this Vishnu with his Sudarshana chakra cuts off the body of Sati into several pieces. These pieces fell on different parts of Earth and wherever they fell it gave birth to a mother temple, which became the epicenter of power and energy. The Kamakhya Temple is the place where the female organ of Sati fell. During the summer solstice the temple remains closed for three days when it is believed that the goddess is menstruating. In these three days the spring in the temple turns red. The scientific explanation behind it, happens only in the summer solstice time when this place turns to be the hottest place on this earth. The mountain where the temple is situated is filled with minerals and iron that heats up and turns the water into red. Apparently it is believed to drink this water is medicinal and highly rejuvenating.
