Pete Maravich, whose full name was Peter Press Maravich, was an American professional basketball player. He was born on June 22, 1947, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and passed away on January 5, 1988, at the age of 40. Maravich is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional offensive players in the history of basketball. He played college basketball at Louisiana State University (LSU) from 1967 to 1970, where he achieved great success and gained national attention. During his college career, Maravich set numerous scoring records and became the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points, averaging an incredible 44.2 points per game. His scoring ability, ball-handling skills, and entertaining style of play made him a fan favorite and earned him the nickname “Pistol Pete.“ After his college career, Maravich was selected third overall in the 1970 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks.
