La Maison (Bait) (1980) Amos Gitai

Bait is the story of house in East Jerusalem. Abandoned during the 1948 war by its owner, a Palestinian doctor ; recquisitioned by the Israeli government as “vacant“ ; rented to Jewish Algerian immigrants in 1956 ; purchased by a university professor who undertakes its transformation into patrician villa... The building site is like a theater where the former inhabitants, the neighbours, the workers, the builder and the new owner all appear, each with a story that corresponds to a stagge in the construction, and metaphorically to a stage in the building of Israel. At the beginning and the end of the film, Palestinian quarriers from Mount Hebron break the stone that will end up in houses that once were theirs.
