This theory concerns the Tremonds. We believe that the grandson is some form/representation of Leland Palmer. The mask represents BOB. It is worn when BOB is in control of the host. Addition: Also note how the boy is seen wearing the mask only at a time when Laura is not aware that BOB is Leland. After she has begun to suspect this the boy no longer wears the mask.
