General Malawi Mbuna care guide :  How to keep your african cichlids vibrant colourful and healthy.  PH 7.5—8.5 Temperature 24–26°C/75–79°F. Dietary requirements : Herbivore diet mainly algae based (avoid high protein foods)  I recommend at least 15 plus fish dependant on species within each community to help disperse aggression. Minimum tank size should be at least 55 gallon preferably larger.  The aquariums footprint (groundspace) is more important than height as these fish are a rock dwelling species of cichlid.(make sure rock and ornaments are secure as these fish like to dig and constantly move the substrate around the aquarium). The aquarium setup should have plenty of rock work formed into structures swim-throughs and caves to divide territory, block lines of sight and create hiding spaces. It is best to use a sand based substrate for these fish as they constantly dig out pits for Spawning (it's a good practice to use a crushed coral aragonite based substrate as this helps buffer PH). Tip…Over filter 10 times the aquarium volume to help with bioload as african cichlids are generally messy fish. Accompany this with weekly water changes, a good weekly maintenance regime will help towards the well  being of your aquarium and keep your fish healthy.
