As far as we know, he essayed it on only four occasions. There was an early string quartet, or movements of one; and a piece for cello and piano was performed in London in 1907. Both these works have disappeared without trace, as has another cello-and-piano composition, a Legend written during World War II. That leaves, as the sole surviving example of Brian’s chamber-music output, another Legend for violin and piano. (Legend was a title he used in various contexts: there are two lost orchestral works so called, from 1903 and 1915, for instance.) The violin-and-piano Legend remained unheard and unpublished during his lifetime; for some years before his death Brian seems to have mislaid the manuscript and considered it lost or destroyed, but afterwards the score and violin part were discovered in his study.
