Eventually, MacArthur authorised Brereton to strike on Formosa. The B-17s were recalled to Clark to refuel and bomb-up for the mission. Most of the fighter aircraft that had been launched before were also running low on fuel and need to land while others were ordered to return. At 12:35 pm Dec 8, 1941, the vast majority of America’s Far East Air Force was on the ground when the Japanese bombers arrived.
