Newport News shipbuilding christens nuclear sub New Jersey

The Navy’s 23rd Virginia-class submarine, pre-commissioning unit New Jersey (SSN 796), was christened Saturday in a ceremony at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division. The ship’s sponsor, Susan DiMarco, performed the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the submarine’s bow during the ceremony. She is a New Jersey resident, retired dentist and wife of former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.
