The fencing seen in this clip is based on the teachings of Renaissance fencing master Joachim Meyer (1537-1571) This is the neutered version of Meyer's fencing, adapted for the possibility of full contact sparring. This means no striking to any part of the opponent's body, only thrusting. Striking is done to the opponent's staff only. The other form of sparring, not shown here, is free fencing where all techniques are allowed, including powered 360-degree strikes. However, in free fencing the aim is to put up a threat that the opponent has to respond to and if he/she fails then the attacker needs to be able to pull the attack and thus avoid injuring the opponent.
