Iran and its allies hurried to criticise the nighttime US and British airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that London and Washington intended to turn the Red Sea into a “bloodbath.“ The operation, which reportedly targeted an airbase, airports, and a military camp, came after weeks of missile and drone strikes on commerce in the Red Sea by Yemeni rebels who claimed to be acting in sympathy with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip amid Israel's battle against the Hamas terror group. Following the airstrikes, the US and its allies issued a unified statement stating that their purpose is to “de-escalate tensions and restore calm in the Red Sea.“ Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said in a statement that Tehran “strongly opposed the military attacks of the United States and the United Kingdom this morning on numerous Yemeni cities.“ He described the strikes as “an arbitrary action, a clear breach of Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a violation of international rules and norms.“ Kanaani warned that the strikes “would have no result other than stoking insecurity and instability in the region,“ and “diverting the world's attention from the crimes“ in Gaza. The Iranian official also urged the world community to take steps “to prevent the spread of war.“ The Houthi rebels are members of the regional The Tehran-aligned “axis of resistance“ against the United States, Israel, and their supporters took Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in 2014, and now controls major portions of the nation. The Houthis' attacks have affected transportation along the important Red Sea maritime route, with several companies cancelling travel through the area. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters following Friday prayers in Istanbul that “first and foremost, [the strikes] are not proportional.“ All of these represent disproportionate use of force.“ “It's as if they want to turn the Red Sea into a massacre,“ he explained. “They are illegitimate under international law,“ he stated.
