Catastrophic avalanches occur when huge slabs of snow break away from a mountain slope and roar downhill. These moving masses of snow and ice can reach speeds of more than 130 kilometres per hour within a matter of seconds. Any victims caught in such horrific events are hurled down the mountainside and buried alive. Most do not survive. In this episode, we’ll look at two of the most terrifying avalanches in recent history; The Mount Everest Avalanches of 2015, which killed an estimated twenty-five climbers on the mountain, as well as bringing damage and injury to roughly 360 people at the base camp below.
