Sonate Sauvage represents the height of the mechanistic futurist period of George Antheil's work in Paris in the early 1920s. This, along with other original compositions for solo piano, in a concert performed opening for the Ballets suédois on October 4th, 1923 caused a full-scale riot, the likes of which had not been seen since the premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps (Stravinsky).
