This time we will take a look at a variation of Meyer’s 4th Dussack drill. Now the 4th drill isn’t actually one single drill, but rather generally about using Mittelhau (i.e. a horizontal cut) to switch the side you are cutting from. The particular part we are doing a variation of, is Meyer’s Example with six cuts (). The sequence of cuts is 1. Diagonally down from your right. 2. Horizontally from your left. 3. Diagonally up from your right. 4. Diagonally up from your left. 5. Horizontally from your right. 6. Vertically down. Meyer has us use a gathering step for each cut, keeping the right foot forward at all times. We’re not going to do that here. Instead remain in place for the cuts. When you get to the end of the vertical cut, turn to face the other direction and bring the Messer or Dussack up on the other side. Pass through right Stier to get to a suitable position to restart the sequence of cuts on this side. Do the sequence of cuts on this side and turn back to the original facing with the vertical cut. Keep going. What we get now is a flow drill that doesn’t require as much space as the original example. Turning to face the other way also means we get to do the cuts both with the dominant foot forward and the non-dominant foot forward. Also doing the cuts with the non-dominant foot forward might be more relevant for messer, than it is for dussack, but as I do more messer than dussack I’m fine with that. More solo messer drills:
