Hana Blažíková: “Vienna 1709” Ensemble Tourbillon, Petr Wagner. Opera arias by Giovanni Bononcini, Attilio Ariosti, Pietro Baldassari and Johann Joseph Fux are balanced by two selections from early Italian oratorios, although the musical style is identical in both genres. All the works feature elaborate and expressive solo lines for the viol, with Petr Wagner, director of the Ensemble Tourbillon, the accomplished soloist. For most of the selections, Wagner amplifies the luscious texture of viols with continuo support from the richly sonorous pairing of organ and theorbo. The continuo drops out, to great effect, for a few pieces that already have elaborate chordal writing for the viol.
