Bach’s jubilant cantata “Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen“ — featuring memorably virtuosic turns for the soprano and the trumpet — and selections from Handel’s Orlando form the center of the program, surrounded by two beloved works by Haydn: the Overture from his most successful opera, Orlando Paladino (inspired, like Handel’s opera, by the epic poem Orlando furioso about a knight driven mad by love), and the sublime Cello Concerto in C, undiscovered until 1961 and now a cello repertoire favorite, performed with exquisite sensitivity and wit by Isserlis. Venue: Aspen Music Festival and School (Aspen, Colorado, USA) Broadcast date: Friday, July 12, 2024 at 2:00 AM
