Republic of Korea Navy commissioned its 7th Daegu-class frigate ROKS Cheonan (FFG-826) on 19 May 2023. ROKS Cheonan (FFG-826) is named in memory of the Pohang-class corvette ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772) that was sunk by a North Korean tropedo in an unprovoked attack on 26 March 2010. The attack resulted in deaths of 46 South Korean sailors. The commissioning ceremony, held at Jinhae Naval Base, was attended by families of the deceased sailors, as well as surviving crew of PCC-772. The new ROKS Cheonan will be assigned to the ROKN 2nd Fleet and patrol the same area of responsibility as the former ROKS Choenan in the Yellow Sea, near the maritime border with North Korea. #navy #korea #southkorea
