This tutorial covers variations 6-13. Composed in 1841 as part of a project spearheaded by Viennese publisher Pietro Mechetti to raise funds for a statue of Beethoven to be erected in Bonn, Mendelssohn’s contribution of this piece was the first set of variations he had written (he later went on to write two additional sets of variations). This tutorial discusses many areas of focus, including tips for improving accuracy with large jumps in variations 6 & 7, advice for effective articulation, how to increase speed, tips for reducing tension, strategies for better hand alignment (especially in the rapid passages of variation 9), how to play arpeggios more lightly and with less tension, how to create a full and rich sound, melodic and harmonic shaping, ideas for effective rubato, tips for quicker rebounds to play the rapid repeated chords in variation 12, how to develop a lighter touch to execute the quick finger staccato in variation 13, how to effectively voice the melody (especially in the left hand of variation 13), pedaling suggestions, and many other tips to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.
