MIDSUMMER'S DAY A long time ago, people of the Scottish Lowlands used to celebrate Midsummer's day: time of the summer solstice and joy of life. The tradition included bonfires, which were a symbol of purification and wellbeing, and greenery representing the power of nature. Young girls and boys used to gather that night to tell fortunes with herbs and flowers, to jump over the bonfires and to swear vows of love. It was believed that the plants on the night of Midsummer gained healing and magical properties, and the ferns were believed to bloom only that night.
