Documentary filmmaker Petra Epperlein’s Karl Marx City is a personal journey that takes her back to the East Germany of her childhood. Inspired by questions that arise after the suicide of her father the film, made with co-director Michael Tucker, her husband, takes audiences into the secret and sinister world of the Stasi. Was her father one of them? She spoke to Wanda Hennig at the 2017 Durban International Film Festival where the film screened as part of the German Film Focus program and where Epperlein took time out to mentor would-be filmmakers.
