In this video we explore augmented 6th chords from the perspective of a jazz musician. What are the 3 augmented sixth chords? The Italian augmented 6th chord (It 6), the German augmented sixth chord (Gr 6), and the French augmented sixth chord (Fr 6.) This function is very important in tonal harmony because it creates an alternative path to a half cadence. These are just dominant chords written using an enharmonic spelling of the b7--as a #6. We use Beethoven's 5th symphony & Rossini's William Tell Overture as examples of augmented 6th chords. ➡️ The supplementary pdf with the sheet music (including annotations) will be available for our “exclusive access“ members here on YouTube Oct-Nov.
