Spert Island isn't a landing site, instead of going ashore, you take a boat ride throughout, and it is a place that can only be described as majestic. Spert is one of those places “you have to know about“. From one Antarctic insider, if your Expedition Leader mentions Spert–you're in good hands. The weather conditions must be absolutely perfect to allow for a visit, due to the anchorage of the ship being fully exposed to the full power of the ocean. The volcanic island lies in the extreme western expanse of the Palmer Archipelago. The volcanic rock faces, arches and outcroppings create a beautiful contrast to the bright white of the snow. Cruising through the channels and caves of Spert Island, you may come across large icebergs, like in this video. Driving the zodiac boat through the green-blue water, around these rocks and ice is truly something to experience. This video footage was captured while working with Albatros Expeditions and in accordance to IAATO guidelines and with the proper permits and permissions. Antarctica is the last wilderness, and an important place to protect. Antarctic content and expeditions should create a greater understanding of the environment.
