The 1966 Three Pence coin was issued as part of the decimalization process in the United Kingdom. It was one of the early coins minted after the country transitioned from the old system of pounds, shillings, and pence to the decimal system. Decimalization was implemented on February 15, 1971, but coins in decimal denominations started to be issued before that date.
