After an introduction by Stedelijk Museum director Willem Sandberg, the camera follows Appel during his so-called ’Elm project’. In his studio we see how he carves and paints an elm stump with the spontaneous and exuberant large movements that characterize his style. The Cobra painter then places the gnarled tree trunk in an Amsterdam park. Van der Elsken films the curious reactions of passing walkers to the object made into art, as well as the children who spontaneously start dancing around it.
