Meanwhile, British Army reinforcements under Major General Edward Braddock arrive in the Colony of Virginia in February, 1755, with Braddock assuming control of operations against the French frontier. He plans a three-pronged offensive thrust against New France: he will lead the southern attack, aimed at Fort Duquesne in the Ohio River Valley; William Johnson will command British Colonial and allied Native forces in the middle theater of New York in the Lake Champlain region; lastly, British and Massachusetts Provincial forces under Colonel Robert Monckton will launch an expedition from Boston up to the Isthmus of Chignecto connecting Canada with Nova Scotia. Monckton’s mission: seize the French fortress, Fort Beasejour, at the isthmus and secure Nova Scotia for the British. During the weeks of June, 1755, Monckton’s troops will conduct siege operations against Fort Beasejour, in a campaign that will be nicknamed the “Velvet Siege.“ The future of French influence in Nova Scotia hangs in the balance at Fort Beasejour.
