Kenyan Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge smashed the marathon world record on Sunday, shaving 78 seconds off the previous best with a dazzling run in Berlin. Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge emphatically set a new marathon world record on Sunday (September 16) with a blistering run in Berlin, slicing a staggering 78 seconds off the previous best. The 33-year-old Olympic champion - widely seen as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era - sprinted through Berlin's Brandenberg Gate to set a time of two hours, one minute and 39 seconds. That smashed his countryman Dennis Kimetto's record which has held since 2014.
