De Montfort's troops of 300-900 knights and mounted sergeants were outnumbered by 1 to 30 according to some contemporary accounts. Be it as it may, the clever tactics of flanking the vastly bigger enemy army and the sheer boldness of de Montfort's cavalry charge resulted in complete chaos and panic among the army led by King Peter II.
