Ghana enters the space race: sending a satellite into orbit. Ghana has become the first sub-Saharan country to send a satellite into orbit around Earth. Ghanasat 1 was released from the International Space Station on Friday almost a month after its launch from the Kennedy Space Center on SpaceX 11 flight by Elon Musk. Around 400 people erupted in applause at the All Nations University in Koforidua, when the satellite began its orbit. Weighing in at 1,000 grams, the Cubesat satellite represents the culmination of a two-year project costing £ 40,000. It is being used to monitor the country's coastline as well as to help Ghana enjoy all the benefits of satellite technology. The satellite, which was built by students in college is equipped with low and high resolution cameras. It is also equipped with a device that will allow to spread the national anthem of the country and other songs of independence of the space. Their progress is also being followed by the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center in Japan. Dr. Richard Dam
