Euglena is a microscopic protist that can be found in freshwater and saltwater environments. Euglena contain chloroplast which they can use to photosynthesize sugars. However, unlike algae, they can also ingest bacteria and small microbes for energy and nutrients. Eulgena contain a large whip-like organelle called a flagellum (flagella, plural), which is used for movement. they also contain an eye-spot or stigma, which helps detect light. Euglena are also capable of metaboly, which is the ability to change the shape of their cell. The magnification of each shot is included in the bottom right hand corner.
