After White Sox batter Yasmani Grandal hit a ground ball to Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel, Gurriel's throw home hit Grandal on the infield grass. Is this interference? Article: HP Umpire Tom Hallion, in position for a play at the plate when Chicago runner R3 Luis Robert slid into him, convened with the crew after the play, and concluded that interference did not occur in the 4th inning of Game 3 of the Astros-White Sox American League Division Series. Houston manager Dusty Baker appeared to make reference to the runner's lane—the 45-foot line parallel to the foul line—and Hallion appeared to say it didn't matter where Grandal ran. So what is the actual rule? Runner's Lane Interference (RLI) is described in Official Baseball Rule (a)(11). It applies when a batter runs to first base “while the ball is being fielded to first base.“ Notice that RLI pertains to a play at first base as the ball is being fielded (or thrown)
