(1875-1912). He studied at the Chernihiv Classical Men's Gymnasium, but he was more attracted to listening to the performances of the brass band for hours. Only the singing teacher supported him in this, he informed his parents about the boy's talent. Out of gratitude to the teacher, Ilya carefully studied with the less able students, but he was in the school infrequently - he was tolerated, because among the students he knew Latin and Greek the best. Ilya was left for the second year, and in 1890 he was expelled from the school, relations with his parents became strained, he ran away from home. He came to Kyiv, lived without food, spent the night on the street or at the train station. He worked as a porter, ,a messenger, rented a room. However, he continued to dream about music. In order to fulfill his dreams, he passes the matriculation exams and entered the Kyiv Music School. After that, relations with the father improve, the family moves to Kyiv.
