Prior to facing off against the Devils, the Penguins had a number of changes to their lineup: John Marino was activated from injured reserve, while Evgeni Malkin and Teddy Blueger were placed onto injured reserve. Nonetheless, the puck would drop for the first time between the Penguins and Devils this season later in the evening. New Jersey scored the first three goals of the game, and Jake Guentzel was able to get the Penguins on the board with just 13 seconds remaining in the 2nd period on the power play. Bryan Rust would go on to score with 5 seconds remaining in the 3rd, but there simply wasn't enough time to complete the comeback.
