Karakuri puppets, or in Japanese Karakuri Ningyō (からくり人形) are traditional Japanese mechanized automate wonders made originally from the 17th and up to 19th century. Where the word Karakuri stands for “trick” or “mechanisms” in Japanese, these incredible automata were only designed for pure entertainment. Entirely built in wood and powered by weights of by wound springs where each actions of our little puppet are controlled by a set of cams and levers. All in all three main types of Karakuri exist and this depending of where the puppet will be used. The Butai Karakuri or stage karakuri were mainly used in theaters, while the Zashiki Karakuri (video above) were smaller puppets mainly used in homes. And finally the Dashi Karakuri, still used nowadays, are puppets used to perform reenactments of traditional myths and legends used during religious festivals.
