Indigo Sparke - In the Garden Co-directed by: Julia Hendrickson & Sara Melvin Director of Photography: Adam Uhl Assistant Camera: Ben Nimkin Edited by: Helena Escallon, Julia Hendrickson & Sara Melvin Colour: Drake Conrad Graphics: Lauren Armstrong Follow Indigo Sparke Indigo Sparke's latest single “In the Garden“, co-written with Chairlift's Patrick Wimberly, was born out of a mystical connection to and a visitation from Mary Magdalene. Sparke felt compelled by her grace and myth in a time when there were only unanswered questions and chaos. Mary has embodied many faces: the mother, the whore, the healer, the maiden, the crone, the priestess and now she manifests through women in the 21st century who are rebelling against being trapped in any one role. The song is arguably Indigo Sparke's most pop leaning production to date and boasts a big sound. Driving beats, groove laden bass, seductive guitars and what sounds like an actual choir of angels all serve to build this intoxicating sound but it's Sparke's beautiful vocal delivery, lyrics, and her gentle invitation toward madness that give this song its euphoric and poignant edge. What is the myth of sinning? How did we separate from nature after the story of Eve and the apple? What knowledge did the seed contain? How has the patriarchy monopolized women's connection to consciousness, the void and all creation? Indigo Sparke uses “In the Garden“ to explore these motifs and to create a portal for all archetypes to be explored without prescriptive commentary. She remarks ““It felt like through this experience I was in a restructuring of my own womanhood and the roles I play or that have often been projected on me without consideration for how I am actually feeling or how I want to express myself as a multidimensional being.
