Traditional peasants' song, known in Italian region of Emilia-Romagna since the beginning of 19th century (though first recordings date from Mussolini's era). Adapted by Ennio Morricone for the film. Indeed, the Imbriani family - failed revolutionary leader Fulvio (Marcello Mastroianni) and his sister Esther (Laura Betti) - must have been very close to the common people... A few minutes later in the film, Fulvio's revolutionary comrade Charlotte (Lea Massari), having watched everything closely (it's her we see approaching the house in the ending) will refer to Esther as “Dirindindin“ and parody her performance. It's also worth noting that this song will be played once again in the scene where Fulvio takes his own nephew as a hostage.
