Macron dashes to New Caledonia on ’mission’ to quell violence The French president has set off to the Pacific territory in a bid to deal with the spiraling violence as independence rioters protest against reforms that they say will dilute the vote of indigenous Kanak people. Pro-independence leader Jimmy Naouna says his party is expecting the French leader to announce the bill expanding voting rights to those who arrived on the island after 1998 to be scrapped, but warned that if Macron was “just coming as a provocation that might just turn bad.“ A cyberattack was launched targeting New Caledonia’s internet cables soon after Macron’s visit was announced with millions of emails sent from several countries to one address.
