A France Revisited Minute - Taps in the Normandy American Cemetery above Omaha Beach. Taps was first played in 1862 during the Civil War. The bugle call was arranged by Union Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield. Initially created to signal lights out at military camps, taps soon became a call to honor the dead at military funerals and memorial services. “We most faithfully honor past sacrifice by resolutely fostering equality and justice today.” .
