Historians debate whether the Comanche Empire was truly an empire. Maybe that’s because Comanche society didn’t have some of the features of most empires. Maybe it was because scholars have historically been blind to the idea of empires created by indigenous Americans. So what exactly counts as an empire? Like the Mongol Empire, the Comanche Empire was formed by nomadic pastoralists.
