How to Play ’Em’ Chord on Guitar How to Play ’Am’ Chord on Guitar How to Play ’Dm’ Chord on Guitar This first part of this guitar lesson for beginners video will show how to play three basic minor chords on guitar as arpeggios. How to Fingerpick Minor Chords on Guitar The second part of this guitar lesson for beginners video will show how to fingerpick minor chords on guitar with basic fingerstyle technique. Sad Mood Minor Chords Minor chords have a more ‘sad’ or ‘serious’ tone when compared to major chords. Despite the obvious difference in tone, the only difference in the makeup between a major and minor chord is just one note. How to Play Minor Chord Arpeggios on Guitar Fret an ‘E’ chord and play a slow arpeggio with the thumb going across the bottom four strings (make sure all strings ring clearly) Next, lift the first first finger off the third string and repeat the same four note arpeggio. When comparing the two arpeggios, an obvious change to a more serious mood occurs when the first finger is lifted. This change in mood shows the fundamental difference between an ‘E’ Major (‘E’) and an ‘E’ Minor (‘Em’) chord. Minor Chord Symbol for Guitar The chord symbol for a minor chord will be a letter followed by a lower case ‘m’. Major chords usually do not have a symbol and often are not even referred to as ‘major’. For example, when someone asks to play a ‘D’ chord, it is understood that the chord played is actually a ‘D’ Major chord. ’Minor’ vs ’Flat’ Musical Terms Many beginners tend to confuse the terms ‘minor’ with ‘flat’ and ‘sharp’ with ‘major’. The terms ‘sharp’ and flat are used to describe specific notes, while the terms ‘major’ and ‘minor’ are used to describe specific chords or scales. Fingerstyle Guitar Lesson for Beginners This fingerpicking guitar lesson for beginners will show how to fingerpick minor chords. Minor Chord Guitar Progression for Beginners This minor chord guitar lesson for beginners also features a minor chord progression using minor chords exclusively. When compared to a chord progression with major chords, this minor chord progression will have more of a sad or serious tone or mood. Each section of this minor chord progression uses basic fingerpicking (fingerstyle) technique, so the entire progression can be written out using just chord symbols. Minor Chords Guitar Tutorial for Beginners Once the minor chord progression is memorized, an additional challenge will be to have another guitarist solo ( ‘A’ Minor scale) while the progression is played. Rather than playing unaccompanied, a guitar duet will help beginner guitarists hear harmonization between a solo melody and a fingerstyle minor chord progression. Guitar Basics Lessons for Beginners Learning how to play a minor chord progression provides three challenges for beginners: fingerstyle technique (fingerpicking minor chords), changing chords, & memorizing beginner chord progressions for guitar. Guitar Basics Foundation for Beginners Along with previous guitar basics lessons for beginners, learning how to play minor chords, how to fingerpick minor chords, and learning a minor chord progression helps establish a solid foundation for the beginner guitarist to start learning actual songs. The minor chord progression in this beginner guitar lesson features standard chord changes found in most basic guitar songs.
