This video is about Philip Roth's political and coming-of-age novel The Plot Against America. It is narrated by a fictional version of Roth himself, recounting events that occurred during his childhood (7-9 years old) during the brief presidency of Charles A. Lindbergh. For Jewish families like the Roths, Lindbergh was an extreme concern because if he was himself an out and out Nazi, he was certainly an admirer of Nazi Germany who had publicly expressed anti-Semitic sentiments. So, when he became president in 1940, many Jewish Americans became extremely suspicious of his policies, especially those that involved (or appeared to involve) weakening the fiber of Jewish families or Jewish communities. Philip experiences these anxieties, but much of the coming-of-age aspect of the novel deals with the difficulty and confusion he experiences in terms of how the adults in the family are reacting to events. *If you’d like to reference this information or would like to ask me a direct questions for an assign
