Original footage of the planning and delivery of Operation Varsity, launched from Marks Hall Estate on 24 March 1945. Operation Varsity was the Allied airborne assault over the Rhine River at Wesel, Germany. The operation was the largest single lift of airborne forces ever undertaken. Marks Hall Estate was the headquarters of the RAF’s 296 and 297 Squadrons, who were based at nearby Earls Colne Airfield and took part in the assault. Early on March 24th 1945, Horsa gliders carrying troops were towed into action. A memorial site was created at Marks Hall Estate to remember all those who took park in the operation, and the site can be visited during opening hours Video courtesy of IWM Duxford
