Slavs and Avars - Sclavs were multi-ethnic (Iranic, Slavic, Gepidic) border-guards / army of Avar empire. Originally, Sclav = Avar soldier, border warrior class (not ethnicity). Avars were placing Slavic military divisions (consisting of different tribes) along its borders with Byzantium (along Danube on south) and Frankish empire (on west). Slavs werent an ethnicity but a military class (sort of Avar border mariners moving by waterways). Yes, Slavic was the lingua franca of these border-guards but Avars employed and moved from empire´s interior part many warlike Iranic (Croats, Serbs, Obodrites) tribes to protect the borders on the south and west (2:55). Avars moved also parts of pure Slavic Dulebs & Buzhans along with them as borderguards. The Avar border-guard population was a MIXTURE, sth like ROMAN ARMY.
