Visit Visit our website This four-minute untitled home movie from 1958 depicts scenes and sites from in and around the famed Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Disneyland, which opened its doors in 1955, is the only amusement park in the Disney franchise that was built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney who came up with the concept of Disneyland after visiting various amusement parks with his daughters in the 1930s and 1940s. The film is interesting in that it shows the L.A. Airways helicopter service to the park from Los Angeles' airport, LAX, about 27 miles away. At the time, S-55 helicopters were used, capable of carrying 7-9 passengers. These were later replaced by larger, Sikorsky S-61L helicopters. The helicopter era at Disneyland ended in 1968, when a Sikorsky 61L was involved in a fatal crash on the evening of August 14th. Middle-aged women sit on a bench (0:14).
