Koten Honkyoku: Tamuke Wow, it has been a week of loss. Besides watching the news in the evening, which has been utterly depressing for years now…we lost the fine pianist, Radu Lupu this week. His recording of Brahms’ op. 118 was always, and still is, an inspiration to me. There was also a tragic loss in the shakuhachi community this week and now I just found out that my sponsor during my studies at Osaka University 大阪大学 just passed away. Osamu Yamaguti was kind to me and supported my research during my time at Osaka University. In the shakuhachi tradition it is common to play the honkyoku Tamuke 手向 when someone passes.
